Nappy Rash
Nappy rash is mostly caused by your baby being left in a wet or dirty nappy for too long. Stale urine creates a type of ammonia which irritates the baby's skin leaving it looking red and blotchy. The ammonia breaks down the protective barrier of the skin causing redness and inflammation of the affected area, sometimes a fungal infection set off by dampness under the nappy can cause nappy rash. If left untreated the rash will spread.
Tips to prevent nappy rash:

  • Change your baby's nappy as regularly as possible
  • Give your baby some nappy-free playtime
  • Wash your baby's bottom with tepid water and allow it to dry
  • Make sure that you have cleaned in all the crevasses
  • If you are using cloth nappies you should switch to disposables until the rash has cleared up
  • Steer clear of detergents or fabric conditioners until the rash has cleared
  • Don't fasten the nappy too tightly giving it some air to breath
  • Use a nappy cream such as Kamillosan to provide a barrier against wetness
