Moist wound healing

Kamillosan Ointment is effective because its gentle chamomile formulation not only soothes sore skin and reduces irritation, but it provides the nipple with a barrier which retains the skins natural moisture, stops the area from drying out and protects the nipple from further abrasion. Kamillosan doesn't contain any alcohol or astringents which can cause further discomfort and dryness to skin.

Moist Wound Healing

Moist wound healing has been practiced for years. Moist wound healing technique requires keeping the wound moist and warm to prevent the formation of scabs and accelerate healing. Wounds tend to heal quicker in a moist environment than if left in dry environments. If the nipple is allowed to dry out, a hard crust or scab will form, which is then broken or removed when the baby latches on, causing additional skin damage and irritation. The wound shouldn't be left to dry out and blow-drying nipples is never recommended!

Healing wounds must be allowed to breathe. Kamillosan will allow the wound to breathe while moisturizing the skin by preventing water loss through the skin's epidermal layer. Water, alcohol or astringents which dry out the skin are not recommended because they cause maceration of the healing and surrounding skin. Hydrating the skin, then allowing it to dry promotes cracking and will delay healing.

Some women applying hindmilk to the nipples at the end of feedings and allow it to dry. This may be soothing but will probably not be enough for more damaged nipples. Wet breast pads should also be avoided as when replaced by dry ones, the nipple will crack. Oil provides a barrier and may temporarily slow the evaporation of natural moisture, but oils are quickly absorbed by pads or clothing and not absorbed into the skin.

Between feeding sessions, wounds can become stuck to the bra. Kamillosan suggests that you apply Kamillosan Ointment liberally then cover with a breast pad to protect clothing.
