Kamillosan Ointment
Prevention and relief of sore nipples.

Kamillosan recognises that breastfeeding is a new skill to learn and that sore nipples may sometimes occur whilst mothers perfect their latching-on technique. Kamillosan always recommends breastfeeding mums firstly contact their HCP to seek further advice until correct positioning has been established. Until they have mastered this, Kamillosan recommends Kamillosan Ointment containing natural chamomile, an excellent treatment for sore nipples.

How does Kamillosan work?
Kamillosan Ointment is a licensed OTC medicine which has been developed to prevent and treat sore nipples. Its unique formulation contains natural chamomile, an ingredient which has long been recognized for its healing and soothing properties. The ointment should be applied after breastfeeding and the nipple area should be cleansed of ointment prior to breastfeeding. It is important for mum to continue to breastfeed whilst the nipple is healing, to keep the breast milk flowing and provide their baby with the nutrients it needs.

Kamillosan Ointment is effective because its gentle chamomile formulation not only soothes sore skin and reduces irritation, but it provides the sore nipple with a barrier which seals in moisture and stops the area from drying out. Wounds tend to heal quicker in a moist environment than if left to dry out as the skin is able to retain moisture. If the nipple is allowed to dry out, a hard crust or scab will form, which can be removed or broken when the baby latches on, causing additional skin damage and irritation.

Kamillosan doesnt contain any alcohol or astringents which can cause further discomfort and dryness to skin.

Can Kamillosan be used for other dry skin conditions?
Yes, absolutely. Kamillosan Chamomile Ointment is also effective in the prevention and treatment of nappy rash and nappy chafe. Kamillosan can also provide soothing relief from minor sore skin conditions including chapped hands, dry lips, dry elbows/knees/heels, and itchy stretch marks.

What causes sore nipples?
A baby who doesn't latch on well or is positioned incorrectly is most likely to be the cause of sore or tender nipples. You should place your breast well into your baby's mouth so his/her lips are splayed and his/her gums surround your nipple. If he/she has to suck or pull your nipple into the mouth it can cause soreness and pain. Latching on incorrectly may also develop poor sucking techniques later on that could be hard to change. When your baby is older, teeth can also cause sore nipples.

A badly fitting bra can apply some pressure on your nipples and is another cause of nipples soreness. Several well-known brands have specialized maternity bras available which can alleviate this problem. Breast pads and plastic linings in bras may also be responsible for the discomfort because they do not allow the skin to breathe, aggravating the problem by trapping moisture close to the nipple.
